Becoming a skateboarder in Kenya: My story

I went to visit my friend at Uhuru park; he told me he was a skateboarder. I had seen movies like street dreams and I was looking forward to see him skate and if he was as good as Paul Rodriguez,  scratch that -- that's overshooting. On the other hand, I could be wrong. When I got the "park" it was a different story. I talked to some of his friends while I was waiting for him at the "park", people even called it the "skate park".When I looked at it -- it was just a staircase made of concrete some of it was a bit worn maybe because people were grinding on it. As I waiting at 2p.m in the afternoon, there was only one skateboarder called Murage. I asked how he got into skateboarding and he told me that he watched a video called wake up which you can find here , another arrived and I asked him the same question and he said he watched play skate by Ibra. The narrative was that they were inspired by Leo, Deecy, Kelvin's part that's for the wake up ...

Skateboarding during the Corona virus pandemic 2020

Late last year, the world was struck by a virus called the corona virus SARS-CoV-2. Some places had been locked down quite early (San Francisco, USA and China) but despite this the world had to continue and we as skateboarders had to continue pushing as usual.   About to go skate However, due to the mode of transmission of the virus; it is recommended that people should wear masks you can find more information about why masks are important here . Therefore, the wearing of the masks is not some conspiracy, waiting for the police to remind you doesn't make sense too; you are protecting yourself and your homies around you. I wear one every time I go skating. Here's a photo Personally wearing a mask while skating is the hardest thing I've ever done; Besides climbing Kilimanjaro. The sweating, the heat and the loss of breath makes it hard to concentrate on landing tricks because in between the panting and the loss of breath the rhythm just tends to slip away. For example, I tho...

Common questions skateboarders are asked

I'll dedicate this article to hilarious or not so hilarious questions I'm asked by random people. They could be out of curiosity or just to annoy you either way. They are interesting and very common. How would you reply to these and what other questions have you been asked a part from these? "Naweza fika tao na hiyo kitu?" (Can i reach Nairobi with that thing?) "How long did it take you to learn?" "Are there ropes on your feet?" "You skated from home to here with that?" "Where do you skate?" "Have you ever broken a bone?" "How many times have you fallen down?" A treat from Adam. Check out his store here . Image credit: Adam Image credit: Robotatertotcomics https://robotatertot.tumblr.com/ Image credit: Adam

The journey to trick mastery

I started this blog a couple of years ago. Now, I'm pretty excited that its up and running and that you are reading the words I'm dropping here. Yeah i said dropping :D. Anyways, today I'm gonna talk about trick mastery I've been working on for the past year or so and sharing what I've learned. I've been recording data of how many times i can do a trick if i was asked to do it 5 times. I found really interesting results within the time period specified. Frequency of ollie as days pass. Green dot is a confidence interval seems to be stagnated at 5. Photo credit: Sam On photo Shuyin Ben I'm sure you're asking yourself why the heck I'm doing this?  In the simplest way possible. I'm trying to get good at skateboarding, i don't believe in the 10,000 hour rule. Paying attention and learning from mistakes is way better said in a previous article .  On the other hand,  there has been this thing pro skaters have been saying ...

Popular skateboarding videos in Kenya

When i started skateboarding a couple of years ago. People often recommended me to watch some of these videos I've mentioned here. I've arranged them in ascending order. First up, Wake up, I've heard a lot of positive reviews about this ones, play skate and the others. I initially wanted to review each video and say something about it and realised how biased I can be. So i decided to use the views to determine the arrangement. Have i left anything out? Is this arrangement valid. Tell me what you think after going through this in the comments section. As always thanks for reading my post. If you enjoyed it please share with your homies today. :)   SYDNEY YONGO'S PART.
