Skate Hustle is Kenyan owned company run by none other than
Deecy aka Sydney Yongo-KING OF SKATE 2014. I asked him several questions to clear the mystery
behind SKATE HUSTLE APPAREL. This is what he got to say.
Why did
you decide to call your business Skate Hustle Apparel?
It came
to me while was watching the last part of the Skate video Hallelujah; during
Torey Pudwill’s part. Before he started he sang Rick Ross ‘Hustlin’
There and
then I thought about the local skate scene here in Kenya; how used to be like
when I began skating. The difficulty skating not having sponsors ,money to
purchase boards, lack of skate shops and good quality boards, discrimination
from people who thought we were posers, unsupportive parents since they thought
that skateboarding is not a profitable venture.
Despite
all these constraints our love for skateboarding was still alive and the need
to get better at it. This is called Hustle. Thus, skateboarding is our hustle, it’s
our heartbeat and we are all hustlers when we are on our boards. Every day we
try we hustle to get better, to land those tricks on the bolts; it represents
everyone who has been in this situation. We are Skate Hustle.
What are
your short and long term goals?
Short
term: To set up Skate Hustle as soon as possible so that I can distribute the
apparel to my team riders.
Long
term: To maintain and expand Skate Hustle to an international level and
standard
What
goals have you achieved so far?
It has achieved unique recognition and attention to future
prospects. Also, the suspense will augment activities.
How is
the response of your products to skaters?
I have
exposed a few ideas to the public in terms of products. I could say there is a
good response. I’m due to do more but a lot is still on the foundation. I could
say they haven’t seen anything yet.
Any
advice you would want to give to those who are planning to start their own
clothing brand?
They
should do a lot of research and planning on the market. Nevertheless, choose
the right business partners.
What is
your view towards your competitors as an example Legendary Skateboarding?
Competitors
are important since they motivate you to review your standards and make them
better. Moreover, they give an impetus to improve the quality as a result you
get more drive to get better or even go higher than expected.
Are you
planning to diversify in other words, venture into making other products such
as Marvin’s, bags, Hoodies for example?
Yes, in
fact Skate Hustle is diverse. Like I said before I have only been releasing few
revealed ideas. However, more is yet to come.
